Growing up or living through the 1990’s, we enjoyed the creations of the decade including yoyo’s, gameboys, and the rising popularity of Disney movies. Since the fashion from the 1990’s has started to creep back into the shops across North America and Europe, it is no surprise the same thing is happening in the theater scene. In Midtown Manhattan where theater rules all, we are seeing the rise and return of many classic films from the 1990’s including Matilda the Musical, The King and I, and the return of The Lion King Musical and Wicked.
Matilda the Musical
Originally a book written by the hilarious and entertaining Roald Dahl, Matilda the Musical retells the story of a young five year old girl who takes back her life from her crooked father, mean family, and bully of a school principal. Retold through the use of song and dance, Matilda the Musical has quickly become a favourite Broadway musical. The musical will play in a variety of different locations across North America until the end of June. With catchy tunes, an emotional story of loving and growing up, and hilarious one liners, Matilda the Musical should not be missed!
The King and I the Musical
The King and I is a fantastic updated musical based on the memoir of Governess Anna Leonowens, who looked after the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860’s. The musical tells of an unspoken love shared between the king and Anna as she looks after his children and teaches them English, while he attempts to modernize his country and bring them up to speed with the ever-changing world. Originally adapted into a musical in the 1950’s, The King and I is back with a fresh look and feel. This classic musical will teach you plenty of lessons in love, life, and history. The King and I will play in theaters across North America until the end of September.
The Lion King the Musical
The Disney classic, The Lion King, is arguably one of the greatest movies of the 1990’s. Adapted into a Broadway play a few years ago, The Lion King the Musical, tells the story of two young lions who learn plenty of life lessons growing up. With songs about childhood, growing up, love, and loss, The Lion King the Musical will have you laughing, crying, and wanting more. The Lion King the Musical will be playing in theaters across North America until mid-May. This brilliant musical keeps returning to Broadway due to its incredible sound, look, and feel- so if you miss out this time, don’t worry!
Wicked the Musical
The Wizard of Oz stole the hearts of millions of people worldwide over the decades. With improvements on the quality of the production and a few adjustments, along came Wicked the Musical, a spin off of the original story of Dorothy and her crazy adventure to the magical land of Oz. Wicked the Musical retells the story of the Wizard of Oz, however it excitedly tells it from the viewpoint of the wicked witches of the west, also known as Elphaba. The musical covers love, friendship, corruption, and power struggles against friends turned enemies. Wicked the Musical will play at locations across North America until mid May. With exciting tunes and an untold story, Wicked the Musical should not be missed!
